PENDAHULUAN

A. Latar belakang

Pembangunan kesehatan merupakan bagian integral dari pembangunan nasional karenanya merupakan suatu kesatuan yang tak dapat dipisahkan satu dengan yang lainnya. Pembangunan kesehatan di Indonesia dilaksanakan dalam suatu Sistem Kesehatan Nasional (SKN) yang unsur-unsurnya terdiri dari individu /perorangan, keluarga, masyarakat, pemerintah (sektor kesehatan dan non kesehatan) dan swasta (SKN, 1992).

Salah satu sektor yang sangat esensial adalah pengembangan di bidang kesehatan, karena sektor kesehatan sangat mempengaruhi sektor pembangunan lainnya. Oleh karena itu dalam konsep pembangunan nasional ditentukan perlunya pembangunan yang berwawasan kesehatan, kebijakan ini tentu sangat relefan dengan posisi Indonesia dengan tingkat kesehatan masyarakat Indonesia berada pada urutan 110 dari 117 negara (UNDP,2002).

1.1 Background of the Study

Love is more than a feeling. It is also a motivational force that compels us to do an action. The experience of love is unique for every person, and one might use that feeling to measure the success of a relationship. Love is fuelled by a mixture of sexual attraction and gratification, the security of the developing attachment, and excitement due to exploration of human being. The sexual attraction wanes, lead to the conflict and withdrawal. Lovers can find themselves securely attached and caring deeply about each other or experiencing some forms of distress, boredom, loneliness or hostility and yearning for a more satisfying relationship.

"I love you" with a feeling is essential. The ability to express those words in a nonsexual context to men, women and children is a good indicator of emotional health. To be able to love men, women and children is part of being healthy adults. Love is a passionate spiritual-emotional-sexual attachment between a man and a woman that reflects a high regard for the value of each other’s person. It is a way not only to feel the extraordinary joy but also to experience self-discovery.

1.1 Background of the Study

People live in a society. They interact each other and actually cannot live alone without their neighbors. Society is very complex because there are many people with different background. James Mc Knee in Introduction in Sociology (1969:124) defines people in social group are conscious of belonging together in common membership, and a group possesion some mechanism to determine who belongs and who doesnot. Talking about modern society means talking about the history of class struggles. Karl Marx looked upon society as composed of the haves and havenots, oppressor and oppressed. Karl Marx in Communist Manifesto assumes:

The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles. Freeman and slaves, patrician and plebeian, lord and serf, guildmaster and journeyman, in a word, oppressor and oppressed, stood in a constant position to one another, carried on an uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight, a fight that each time ended, either in an revolutionary reconstruction of society at large, or in the common ruin of the struggling class.(1963:58)

1.1 Background of the Study

English  is  a  language  spoken  by  people  in  English  speaking  countries  or  in international  events among countries around the world. Ramelan (1992:2-3) stated that “English as an international language is used to communicate, to strengthen and to fasten relationship among all countries in the world in all fields, for example: in tourism, business,  science  and  technology,  etc.  Considering  the  importance  of English, people from various non-English speaking countries  including Indonesia learn English.” Having proficiency in English, people will be able to face this over- changing world easily. So, it is not surprising if the number of people who are interested in learning English is getting increased from time to time.

In Indonesia,  English  has  been  taught  as  a  foreign  language.  Ramelan (1992; 1)  stated that “English has been taught in our country as the first foreign language since the proclamation in Indonesia on the 17th  of August 1945.” It is taught as  a  compulsory subject  in  junior  high  school  and  senior  high  school  and  in universities or institutes for several terms. Even, it has been tried to be taught to the students of some elementary schools.

1.1 General Background of the Study

Even though they come from different field, linguistics studies and literary studies are assumed to be connected in certain respects as intellectual disciplines. Linguistics, as the scientific study of language, necessarily “covers all aspects and uses of language, and all styles” (Hill, 1969: 196); or “an aspect of the study of language” (Halliday, 1985:4). This means that linguistics concerns with the way people use language and with how the various components of language function.

As we know, language is not only used in our everyday live, but it might also be presented in the form of a text. This text varies from just a short letter to a longer written forms presented in books and papers. Halliday (1985:11) proposed the definition of text as “an object in its own right; it may be a highly valued object, such as literature”. Literature, then, as defined by Rees (1973: 2) “is the written form of language, which expresses and communicates thoughts, feelings and attitudes towards life”. Literature comprises a number of particular uses and styles, forms and important. Those uses, styles and forms are also “a valuable part of the linguistics material in the study of a particular language”, as stated by

Robins (1980: 311).

1.1 General Background of the Study

Language is the most important thing for people as a means of communication. It is basically a means of both oral and written communication. People use language to express their ideas and wishes to others’ people such as when they need others help so that close relation among members of the group can be carried out (Ramelan, 1993: 8). Ramelan further states that “the use of language enables the members of a social group to cooperate with one another for their own benefit.”

It is important to learn English because it is an international language which is used in many countries over the world and widely used in many sectors such as information, trade, education, etc.

In Indonesia, English has an important role especially in education. Therefore, English is taught as the first foreign language in all levels of schools and language courses. In elementary school, English has been taught as a local content. Since The Basic Course Outlines of the 2004 Curriculum states that the objective of learning English at elementary school as a local content is to develop students' communication ability in the context of school (2004: 7). It means that the students are expected to be able to make simple transactional and interpersonal conversation which is potentially needed to communicate in the context of school. Here, the teacher plays important role since he has to be able to set students

interest and motivation in learning English in order to develop students’ ability to

communicate using all the resources they have already acquired to interact with others about their needs and interest.
