CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

In this chapter presented the introduction of research. It covered background of the research, formulation of the problems, objective of the research, the significant of the research, the hypothesis of the research, the scope and limitation of the research, and definition of key terms.

A.    Background of the Research
In this present it is important to be able to speak and understand English language. English has made very big influence in the parts of human life. Learning English is not only important to get education but also to get new technology, science and knowledge. It is spoken in almost every nation in the world. In our world, it is known as universal language. Anywhere we go in the world, we will find people who speak English. And majority of the world of entertainment use English too.
“There are two kind of ways in which people establish communication in language. They are oral and written. Oral and written occur within one social and work together to form meanings within that situation.”(Burns, 1997:)
According to Brown (2000:335) “Written communication is result of employing strategy to manage the composing process, which is one of gradually developing a text. Written product is often the result of thinking, drafting, and revising procedure that require specialized skills, skills that not every speaker develops naturally.”
 When people communicate by written, they are alone and they indirectly contact with other people to whom they are writing. In written communication the writer often feels under an obligation to achieve accuracy and precision, for example in writing a letter, poem, short message, service, etc.
“Communication by oral can be described as producing sound to communicate with other and the others side produce the sound to give response back to understand each other what they want to express with a word.”(Hornby, 1985:35).

A.           Background of Study
According to Chomsky in Murcia Discourse and Context in Language teaching A Guide for Language teachers (Murcia, 2000:74) “Language is a rule-governed innate system and that those who have acquired a natural language apply its rules in original and creative ways by producing utterances they have never heard before.” By using language people can express their feelings and ideas to someone else. There are so many languages in this world, one of them is English. English is an international language that is used for communication by most of people all over the world. It has become the dominant language in many fields of activity, such as industry, business, tourism, international relation, etc. English is used as the first foreign language in our country. It is used as a subject learned at the school because it gives good prospect in the future. It has been taught from elementary school up to higher education, even many courses grow offering qualified English education. In English there are four  integrated skills such as listening, reading, writing, and speaking that must be mastered well. Beside that, there are many components of linguistics that can help the students in mastering English skills, such as structure ( grammar), vocabulary, and pronunciation.
 In learning a foreign language, vocabulary plays an important role. It  is one of the foundations for the students in studying  English that can links the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing all together. In order to communicate well in a foreign language, students should acquire an adequate number of words and should know how to use them accurately.With sufficient of vocabulary mastery they will be very easy to understand the language. In other words, we can say that more or less the quality of English skill depends on the quantity and quality of our vocabulary achievement. Vocabulary is the most important elements that should be taught for the first in teaching English. It is the basic learning in teaching and learning English. Celce and Olshtain (2000:73) state that  “ word lists were a core  elements of the language curriculum” it means that words or vocabulary is the basic element to study language. So, we have to mastering in vocabulary firstly, before we are going to the high level.

This chapter presents the background of study, problems of the study, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, definition of the key term and organization of the study.

A.    The Background of the study
            English is derived from England, one would think. English is one of the foreign languages used around the world. Many people want to learn and master it because of its importance in the world. However, they sometimes find some difficulties and some of them surrender to learn it. Now, in all school there is English learning. So, the students get knowledge about writing, reading, listening and speaking. This skill is important to students.

            Language is thought to have originated when early hominids first started cooperating, adapting earlier systems of communication based on expressive signs to include a theory of other minds and shared intentionality. Language may refer either to the specifically human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication, or to a specific instance of such a system of complex communication. Yet another definition sees language as a system of communication that enables humans to cooperate. This definition stresses the social functions of language and the fact that humans use it to express themselves and to manipulate objects in their environment (Wikipedia: 2011)
            As a teacher must know the students needed about vocabulary in junior high school. They need addition vocabulary. Because if students good vocabulary will be easy to study English in for skill. In reading, listening, writing and especially in speaking. Speaking is important to students in junior high school. The student’s good vocabulary will be easy to conversation in speaking.
            So, the teacher must look for solution it. The teacher can used the community language learning (CLL) method to student’s achievement in speaking. This method is suitable for teaching speaking. Because this method is accord students condition in teaching speaking. Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing and receiving and processing information. It is often spontaneous, open-ended, and evolving (Bailey et al, 2005:2).
            Teaching speaking means teaching the students to use the language in real communication. The English teachers should teach them to produce the English speech sound and sound pattern. The students should be able to use words and sentences which are appropriate with the contexts (Cahyono, 2011:43). Teaching speaking is sometimes considered a simple process. Commercial language school around the world hire people with no training to teach conversation. Although speaking is totally natural, speaking in a language other than our own is anything but simple (Nunan, 2003:48)

Improving Reading Skill on the Narrative Text through Story Mapping of the Second Year Students at MTs Darussalam (PBING-28)

Today English as one of the subject matters learned by the students is given at any educational level, such as elementary school, intermediate school, and upper intermediate level. It is the key to face the globalization era. As an international language, it plays in important role in many aspect of life such as education, economics, technology, and etc. English language covers four language skills that must be mastered if someone to be successful in English, namely: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Reading is one of the language skills which is important for academic success because reading is the basic to learn English. It usually integrated with other English skill. Reading is the process of reconstructing the writer’s idea written in a text or printed symbols based on background and experience. According to the curriculum of the Junior High school curriculum, the students are expected to have interest in English and to develop their abilities, especially in reading. Reading has many kinds of the text. They are narrative, descriptive, recount, procedure, and report etc. According to the syllabus, narrative text is taught to the second year students of junior high school.
In learning process, there are many problems that are faced by students. In Students of MTs Darussalam here, especially in reading comprehensions they are difficult to understand the meaning of the text given by the teacher and they can’t differentiate the language feature of the text. For this reason, teaching reading for the students in junior high school needs appropriate technique in order that the students are active and understanding in reading lesson. In teaching reading to the students in junior high school, the teacher should pay attention not only on how the right implementation of the techniques are suited for the students characteristics but also on students participants in activities that simultaneously promote the development of reading skill. It is the target to create the teaching learning process becoming interesting and understanding to the students in order to reach the learning goal.

Language is a tool of communication, which is important in human’s life. According to Roqib, the function of the language chronologically is to give expression, communicate, and make integration and social control. With language, people will communicate either when they want to express their idea or receive message from other people. Language is a tool of communication used by human to interact with others. Language has a universal nature, so everyone can use it without looking at race, ethnic group, and social status until international and intercontinental. Brown says that language is also used as a tool of communication or interaction with other people.[1]
            By developing science and technology more and more, the necessity to master English for Indonesian, especially intellectuals and the candidate of intellectuals (students) looks more obvious. It is caused by the position of English in the world now days. English is one of the greatest languages in the world used as communication both oral and writing.
     It is common that mastering English is obligation. The reality proves that mastering English is very important to continue study to the high level, to get a job, to keep up with science and technology development, and to communicate in global era. To communicate speaking is needed for real communication among people. By speaking, we will able to express our ideas and feeling. This reality makes teachers thinking that their students should master speaking ability.

A.      Background of the Study
Language is an instrument to address and to understand idea, reason, feeling, either orally or written.[1] Language is communication to transfer or to explain idea or knowledge to another person. It means that without language human can not develop their idea and their culture. In other word, language has very important roles in human’s life, since language is the source of human life and power.[2]
English an international language; it is used by most of the people in the world. In Indonesia, English is one of foreign language. The application of teaching and learning process undergoes many problems, because teaching English is difficult from teaching other language such as: Indonesia, Javanese, etc. The teacher can not do that, the teaching and learning process will not run well, and the object of teaching will be difficult to be achieved.
Actually English has been taught starting from kindergarten or elementary level, but most of Indonesia people still can not use English for communication well. Such condition may be caused by many factors such as the method, the media, and the technique used are not appropriate. English consist of four skills, they are: speaking, listening, writing, and reading. To master English, learners need to master vocabulary, it means that without an extensive vocabulary and strategies in enquiring new vocabulary, the learners often achieve less that their potential opportunities around them such as listening to radio, listening to native speaker, using language in different contexts, reading or watching TV.[3]

1.1 Background of the Study

English debate is nowadays widely known among senior high school students especially in Semarang. This activity has been something popular for its image among both students and English teachers. They think of this activity as something outstanding. This thought may appear due to the fact that not many students of senior high school are able to do so. Only those who are at least capable in producing oral communication in English will be chosen as debater. Referring to this assumption, it is no wonder that the number of English debaters is not of great significance compared with the whole number of students in general.



The effort of facilitating this great potential has been done. It is proven that many competitions among high schools and vocational schools have been conducted recently. In fact, this effort gains so much attention and respect from several parties. They are students as the agent, teachers as the supporters, and frequently may collaborate with the government as the facilitator through Department of Education to present debate competitions. The question that may arise upon this notion is how it gains such great attention.

This chapter is divided into six sub sections. They are background of the study, reason for choosing the study, research question, purpose of the expected result of the study, significant of the study, limitation of the problem, and outline of the final project.




Teaching is not an easy job but it is a necessary one and can be very rewarding when we see our students’ progress and know that we have helped to make it happen. It is true that some lessons can be difficult and students feel stressful at times but it is also worth remembering that the best teaching can also be extremely enjoyable.
Based on the concept and function of English as stated in the 2006



Competence-Based Curriculum which has similar principle with Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP) for SMP/MTS, the teaching-learning of English has the purpose to develop four language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. The other English language components; vocabulary, structure and pronunciation (in speech) or spelling (in writing) are also important to be taught to support the development of four language skills. It means that English teacher should teach the four aspects. It is not only reading or speaking but also listening and writing so the students can master all these skills.

In avoiding the readers' misunderstanding, the writer would like to give the limitation of the title It is of course that in giving the limitation of the title is not at wholly. From the thesis entitled " The Influence of the Ability in Mastering Dialogue on the Achievement in Learning English to the Second Year Students at M A N Magelang ", the writer just wants to explain some terms related to the title. Especially those are becoming key words. They are : Influence, Ability, Mastering Dialogue, Achievement, Learning Eng lish, and MAN Magelang.


Influence : It is a noncountable noun. It means power to affect sb’s character, beliefs, or actions through example, fear, admiration, etc. According to Professor Sir Randolph Quirk in his dictionary entitled 'Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English' N.Edn., the word Influence means the power to have an effect on someone or something without the-use of direct force or command . In this thesis the influence shows the relation between the ability in mastering dialogue and the achievement in learning English.

They have the whole ability because God has granted them brain. Their curiosities are so great that they learn more and more. Besides, something that makes them more special than the others is they know the way to express their feeling, thought, and emotion. Something to provide “a place” for all of the people’s expression is literature.


Literature, according to Moleong as quoted by Spadlex (2000:13), is the knowledge which is earned by human beings arise conduct and it is used to reflect and express experience. Another opinion said that literature is one of the great creative and universal means of communicating the emotional, spiritual, or intellectual concerns of mankind (The Encyclopedia of Americana, vol. 22:559). It seems that something human being does deals literature, especially in communicating. To communicate to each other may be done by a means, such as by a letter, speaking directly, by phone etc. Even something they wrote or said, no matter what its content, could be called a literature. Well, in this life, in purpose or not in purpose, they have involved in a literature.

1.1 General Remarks

Human being is god’s creature, since born he or she has given thought and mind that they use in their interaction in their environment to each other. The thought and mind appear the human’s emotion. The emotion is coming to response anything which derives from outside.

The emotion that owned by human being consists of two kinds. They are good and bad emotion. Good emotion usually fulfills someone’s life dominating with love, kindness etc. however, the people in bad emotion, his or her life will be dominated by hatred. This emotion commonly makes the people in trouble as well as in the big disappointment. Hatred in very bad to be owned. To get the clear understanding on hatred, Webster English language dictionary define :


Strong aversion detestion coupled with ill, either the simple emotion or emotional state of aversion abhorrence.
(Webster, 1974 : 1144)
From the quotation above can be said that hatred is the feeling of dislike to someone because of one or some, reason. The reasons can be caused by disapointed, betrayed etc.
The quotation above shows that hatred is the feeling of dislike to someone because of one or some reason. At least it can be said that hatred is a response towards someone’s bad behavior or attitude. Dealing with the analysis has taken hatred as the subject matter on this study.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

Chapter  I  is  Introduction  which  consists  of  some  sub-chapters.  They  are background  of  the study,  reasons  for  choosing  the  topic,  statements  of  the problem, objectives of the study, significance of the study, and the outline of the study.

1.1 Background of the Study

In this modern era, when everyone lives with their right, where there are a lot of women’s movements, we still can find dependent women that are trapped under man’s authority. Some call it as patriarchy, actually these kinds of case have many causes not only patriarchy.  Still people assumed that patriarchy is the main factor of it. Here are some examples of domestic violence:

Bima, NTB. A teacher tortured his wife because his wife forbad him to do polygamy. Mujnah, the wife, reported her husband behavior to the local police department. Police had  caught  Mujnah’s husband and sentenced him 5 years in jail. The cause of domestic violence  in  this case is quite simple; it is just a problem of self control of the husband’s passion. In other words, it just because one reason, troubles never end.

CHAPTER I 
 INTRODUCTION

 1.1 Background of the Study


It is obviously understood that in our lives, family is so worthy. Family, as a child’s first  environment, sets the pattern for her/his attitudes toward people, things and life in general. As Teagarden (1946), has pointed out that “all manners of attitude deviations can be and often are,  accounted for by the subtleties of family   relationships”.   Therefore,   the   writer   concludes   harmonious   family relationship depends on the attitudes settled between them.

Freud as cited by Hurlock (1956: 499) states that “there have been marked changes in  attitudes toward children”. Freud contents that too much “parental tenderness” accelerates sexual maturity, “spoils” the child and makes him unable to be satisfied with a smaller amount of love in later phase of life. This attitude toward too much love and interest in and affection for the child was echoed by one of American Psychologists, J.B. Watson (1928: 499). He was  the one who sounded the loudest warnings to parents to beware of too much mother love because of the harmful effects on the personality development of the child.

There are many kinds of parental attitudes established by researchers, and the most commonplace are permissiveness, overprotectiveness, submissive, rejection, domination,  acceptance,  and  submission  to  a child  (Hurlock:  1956).  Those parental attitudes influence children’s emotion. According to Warga (1983: 219), there are five basic emotions, i.e. fear, love, anger, sorrow, and joy. In line with Warga, Ekman and Friesen (1971: 5) suggest that “there are six basic biologically programmed emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust”. To be more specific, Hurlock  (1956: 226) in his book Child Development divides children’s emotion into seven, i.e. fear, anger, worry, jealousy, joy, affection and curiosity.
